Giovanni Gabrieli
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Giovanni Gabrieli was organist and composer at St Mark's in Venice, a church with galleries facing each other. He wrote for groups of singers and wind players who answered one another from different places, and he was one of the first to notate precisely which instrument plays which part. In his Sonata pian e forte (1597) he also indicates when to play softly and when loudly. His pupil Heinrich Schütz took that style to Germany.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to the Sonata pian e forte and hear how the soft, dark group of wind instruments is suddenly answered by the full, loud tutti.
