Brecon Baroque

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Brecon Baroque is an ensemble that plays Baroque music, named after the Welsh town of Brecon in Powys. It plays mainly the repertoire of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and has been releasing albums since 2010.

Music and breakthrough

The series begins with Violin Concertos in 2010, followed by Double & Triple Concertos in 2013. After that the musicians chose works that every Baroque lover knows: L'estro armonico in 2015, The Art of Fugue in 2016 and Le Quattro Stagioni in 2018. In between comes Grandissima Gravita in 2017. More recently came Goldberg Variations Reimagined in 2023, The Muses Restor'd in 2024 and Just Biber in 2025. So the line runs from Vivaldi and Bach to the violinist and composer Biber.

Influence

The ensemble belongs to the movement that plays early music in the ways the composers themselves knew. This produces a clear, transparent sound in which every voice remains easy to follow. For anyone who knows pop, this is the world that harmony, bass lines and repeated patterns come from, which later return in every genre.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Le Quattro Stagioni and notice how the soloist and the string orchestra take turns. Try to hear where the orchestra plays a recurring theme and where the soloist plays freely over it.
