Barbara Strozzi
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Barbara Strozzi grew up in Venice in the household of the poet Giulio Strozzi, probably her father, who had her take lessons with the composer Francesco Cavalli. She sang in the academy he founded and between 1644 and 1664 published eight collections of her own music, without the support of a court or convent. In the Venice of her day, no one else had more secular vocal music in print. Her arias and cantatas follow the text closely, often over a constantly recurring bass line.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to L'Eraclito amoroso and follow the bass line: hear how it keeps repeating the same descending steps while the voice laments above it.
