Altamiro Carrilho

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Altamiro Carrilho was born Altamiro Aquino Carrilho in 1924 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. He was a Brazilian musician and composer, regarded as a master flautist and as one of the most important representatives of choro, the Brazilian folk music of Rio.

Music and breakthrough

Choro is an instrumental style that arose in Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century. The flute usually carries the melody, accompanied by guitars and percussion. The style is lively and virtuosic, with fast melodic lines that circle around one another almost playfully. Carrilho released the albums Dobrados em Desfile in 1959, Rio Antigo in 1961, Choros imortais №2 in 1965 and Antologia do Chorinho in 1975, among others. In this way he kept the old repertoire alive and made it known to a large audience.

Influence

In School of Rock he stands for the work of Joaquim Callado, whose A Flor Amorosa dates from 1880. Callado was a nineteenth-century flautist and an early figure in choro. That Carrilho played this piece shows that choro is a tradition in which a player takes over the work of his predecessors. His playing is regarded as an example for later flautists.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to A Flor Amorosa and notice the flute carrying the melody, with guitars beneath. Try to hear how the flautist lets the line dance lightly.
