William Bloke

William Bloke verscheen in september 1996, vijf jaar na het vorige studioalbum. In de tussentijd was Billy Bragg in 1993 vader geworden en had hij tijd genomen voor zijn gezin. Zijn platen uit de jaren tachtig noemde hij ideologisch politiek. Halverwege de jaren negentig vond hij de wereld minder helder, en dat gevoel en zijn veranderde leven hoor je op het album. De titel is een woordspeling op de dichter William Blake.

De teksten gaan over verloren idealen in From Red to Blue, kinderdromen in The Space Race Is Over, liefde in The Fourteenth of February en het ouderschap in Brickbat. Northern Industrial Town gaat over het conflict in Noord-Ierland, en A Pict Song gebruikt woorden van Rudyard Kipling. Grant Showbiz produceerde. Upfield was de enige single en bereikte plaats 46 in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.
