Waylon Jennings

Waylon Jennings werd op 15 juni 1937 geboren in Littlefield, Texas. In 1959 huurde Buddy Holly hem in als bassist voor de Winter Dance Party-tournee. Jennings gaf zijn plaats in het gecharterde vliegtuig op dat in februari 1959 verongelukte en Holly, The Big Bopper en Ritchie Valens het leven kostte. Hij overleed op 13 februari 2002 in Chandler, Arizona.
Muziek en doorbraak
Hij geldt als een van de pioniers van de outlawbeweging in countrymuziek. Vanaf 1973 maakte hij platen voor RCA waarin hij meer zeggenschap had, te beginnen met Lonesome, On'ry and Mean. Honky Tonk Heroes verscheen datzelfde jaar. Daarna volgden Dreaming My Dreams (1975) en Wanted! The Outlaws (1976), samen met Willie Nelson, Tompall Glaser en Jessi Colter. Dat laatste album was het eerste platina countryalbum.
Invloed
Met Willie Nelson scoorde hij Luckenbach, Texas en nam hij het album Waylon and Willie (1978) op. Hij was de verteller van de televisieserie The Dukes of Hazzard en zong de tune. In de jaren tachtig vormde hij met Nelson, Johnny Cash en Kris Kristofferson de Highwaymen.
