Spyro Gyra

Spyro Gyra is een Amerikaanse jazzfusionband uit Buffalo, New York, opgericht in 1974. De saxofonist Jay Beckenstein en toetsenist Jeremy Wall begonnen met jazz- en rockmuzikanten uit de clubs en bars van de stad. De naam komt van spirogyra, een groenwier waarover Beckenstein op school had geleerd. Een barhouder schreef het verkeerd op, en zo bleef het.
In 1977 verscheen het debuutalbum Spyro Gyra, eerst in eigen beheer. Het tweede album Morning Dance kwam in 1979 uit. Daarna volgden Catching the Sun, Carnaval, Freetime, Incognito en City Kids. Op Incognito speelden gasten als Marcus Miller, Steve Gadd en Toots Thielemans mee. De muziek combineert jazz, R&B, funk en pop, en Dave Samuels voegde marimba en vibrafoon toe aan het geluid. Billboard noemde Spyro Gyra het succesvolste jazzact van de jaren tachtig. De band hoort bij het ontstaan van smooth jazz.
