Merzbow is de naam waaronder Masami Akita sinds 1979 muziek maakt. Hij werd op 19 december 1956 in Tokio geboren. De naam komt van het Merzbau van Kurt Schwitters, een kunstwerk van gevonden voorwerpen. Akita raakte als student aan de Tamagawa-universiteit in de ban van dada en surrealisme. In 1980 verscheen zijn debuut Fuckexercise op zijn eigen label Lowest Music & Arts. Sindsdien bracht hij meer dan vijfhonderd opnames uit.
Muziek en doorbraak
Zijn muziek bestaat uit noise: harde, vervormde elektronische klank, zonder maat of melodie. In de jaren negentig werd het geluid zwaarder, onder invloed van death metal en grindcore. Pulse Demon verscheen op 28 mei 1996 bij Relapse Records. Het album is in 1995 in Tokio zonder overdubs opgenomen en met extreem hoog volume gemasterd. Akita gebruikte onder meer metalen voorwerpen, een EMS-synthesizer en een fuzzbox als pulsgenerator. In 2000 verscheen de box Merzbox, met 50 cd's. Merzbeat (2002) opent met Promotion Man.
Invloed
Merzbow is een van de bekende namen uit de Japanse noisescene, die Japanoise wordt genoemd. Akita werkte samen met Boris, onder meer op Sun Baked Snow Cave (2005) en Gensho (2016). Rond 2002 werd hij veganist en zette hij zich in voor dierenrechten.

Luistertip. Woodpecker No. 1 opent Pulse Demon (1996). Let op dat er geen melodie of akkoord in zit: het is vervormd geluid dat bijna zes en een halve minuut doorgaat. Akita gebruikte voor dit album een fuzzbox als pulsgenerator.
