Blind Guardian

Blind Guardian is een Duitse powermetalband uit Krefeld. Ze begon in 1984 als Lucifer's Heritage en nam de huidige naam aan voor het debuutalbum Battalions of Fear in 1988. De kern bestaat uit zanger Hansi Kürsch en leadgitarist André Olbrich, samen met ritmegitarist Marcus Siepen en sinds 2005 drummer Frederik Ehmke.
Muziek en doorbraak
De band bracht Somewhere Far Beyond uit in 1992 en Imaginations from the Other Side in 1995. Haar stijl is powermetal met symfonische, speed- en progressieve invloeden. Kürsch baseert zijn teksten op J.R.R. Tolkien en andere schrijvers. Nightfall in Middle-Earth uit 1998 is een conceptalbum naar The Silmarillion. Mirror Mirror verscheen op 7 februari 1998 als single, twee maanden voor het album. Het nummer gaat over Turgon, die met hulp van Ulmo de stad Gondolin bouwt.
Invloed
Na dit album volgden A Night at the Opera in 2002 en Beyond the Red Mirror in 2015. Blind Guardian laat zien hoe sterk de band de fantasy van Tolkien in metal omzette: de albums volgen de verhalen, en de nummers dragen titels uit die verhalen. Zo kreeg de powermetal een literaire kant.
