Anthony Phillips

Anthony Phillips werd in 1951 geboren in Chiswick, toen nog in Middlesex. Hij ging naar Charterhouse, een kostschool in Godalming, waar in 1967 Genesis ontstond. Hij was de eerste gitarist van de band en een van de oprichters.
Muziek en doorbraak
Phillips speelde mee op From Genesis to Revelation (1969) en Trespass (1970). Het touren viel hem zwaar. Hij kreeg last van podiumvrees, en na een longontsteking raadde zijn arts hem aan te stoppen. Zijn laatste optreden met de band was op 18 juli 1970 in Haywards Heath. In de jaren daarna werkte Phillips aan eigen muziek. Zijn solodebuut The Geese & the Ghost verscheen in 1977, gevolgd door Wise After the Event (1978), het eerste album van een contract met Arista. Ook in 1978 verscheen Private Parts & Pieces, een verzameling nummers die begon aan een reeks van twaalf delen.
Invloed
Zijn eerste opdrachten voor televisiemuziek kreeg hij in 1976 van Riverside Studios. In 1981 tekende hij bij het label Atmosphere voor bibliotheekmuziek, en sindsdien is dat zijn belangrijkste bron van inkomsten. Zo werd een musicus die op het podium niet kon blijven, een componist van muziek voor beeld.
